WHAT IT IS NOT

What it is not: it is not affiliated with any genealogy website or DNA company, there is no file import or export, there is no DNA interpretation or relationship prediction, and there is no promise about what records you will find.

This is a personal record keeping tool. It is not affiliated with any genealogy website or DNA testing company, and it does not import or export files from them.

It does not interpret DNA results or predict relationships; shared DNA and relationship guesses are notes you type.

Generations and relationship labels are worked out only from the parent IDs you enter. This file does not search for records or check facts, and it can't promise what you will find.

WHAT YOU GET

Add as many people as you like, including siblings, spouses and in-laws. Re-root the pedigree on anyone to go further back.

THE 11 TABS

Start Here: numbered first steps, color key and notes.

Setup: your home person, today's date display, the theme and sample switches, and every dropdown list (surnames, places, record types, where searched, census years).

People: one row per person with dates exactly as written (12 Mar 1850, abt 1850, bef 1900, 1850s), places, father and mother IDs, spouse IDs, a living flag, notes and a photo link. Birth year, death year, generation, side (paternal or maternal) and the relationship label fill in by formula. ID checks flag common ID mistakes.

Pedigree: five generations from any person you pick, set up to print on one landscape page, with a note that explains why a box is blank.

Family Group: pick a couple to see both parents and their children, sorted by birth year.

Sources: what each record is, where it is held, the citation, the date you looked, a link, and the people and facts it supports.

Research Log: date, person, goal, where searched, source, found or nothing found, and the next step, with a repeat search check.

Records Checklist: one row per person, Found, Needed, Not found or Not needed for each record type and 8 census years, with % complete and the gaps highlighted.

DNA Matches: your own notes on each match (name or initials, the shared DNA you type, side, your relationship guess, contact status, linked person).

To Do: research tasks with priority, due date, Done, and Overdue or Due this week.

Dashboard: people, generations, births with a record found, records still needed, open to dos, people found per generation, top surnames and birth places.

Product developed with the latest Excel version (Office 365) Desktop App. Older versions might not be able to support all the features.

YOUR DATA AND THE SAMPLE

Information about living people is private. Mark living people and take care before you share or print your file. Your file stays in your own Google or Microsoft account; we never see it. Don't store addresses, phone numbers, email addresses or ID numbers in this file.

The sample Hartwell family and all sample names, dates, places, sources and DNA matches are fictional. This organizer has no health, medical history or cause of death fields, no contact details, and no estate or password pages.

GOOD TO KNOW

Generation numbers count up to 12 generations from the home person; re-root to go further.

Set up and enter your research on a computer.

Formula cells are locked without a password and every typing cell is unlocked. To sort, unprotect the sheet (no password), sort the whole table, then protect it again. Filtering works while protected.

Dark prints dark, so switch to Light before printing.
